Well my project for my Digital Media class certainly came with problems. I had asked a cousin of one of my friends to be the main character for my video because her style was spot on for my main character. I sort of got the feeling that after I asked she was going to back out and she did. I don't hold it against her because I would not want anyone to feel uncomfortable. So to get around this roadblock, I was my main character. It's going to be hard to sit and watch my classmates' reactions to my acting.
Another roadblock that has come up is music. I have very specific songs that I want to use in my video and so I emailed the record company. To this day I have not heard back from them. I asked about this issue during class and I received great suggestions for dealing with the copyright. After discussing it in class it does not feel like an issue.
I wanted to use this assignment as a chance to learn more about Mac computers. I have a goal for myself which is to become more proficient with Macs because I've always only used PC's. So I was excited to mess around with Final Cut Pro. However, I couldn't even get the darn program to open up. I tried on multiple computers in the lab and it wouldn't open. So I became defeated and gave up. I decided to download Windows Live Movie Maker instead. I had high hopes of creating a professionally edited video, and then I couldn't open Final Cut. But, I am using Windows Live Movie Maker to it's full potential. There are some new effects that I really enjoy. It's certainly not an amazing editing software, but it is a program that I feel comfortable with.

Sounds like you and I are having very similar problems with our projects. Thanks for asking about using music in class the other day... I had the same question but wouldn't have remembered to ask until after class. How have you decided to work around the permission issue with your songs? I'm also not hearing back and I figure I'm going to have to limit my use of the music to little clips throughout the video or something.
ReplyDeleteI decided to just use the songs and list in the description for my video that the songs do not belong to me instead they belong to the artist and record label and for the viewers to buy them.
DeleteI still haven't heard back either. I most likely never will, so if my video gets flagged, then it's a slap on the wrist really.

Thanks.
DeleteNoooo!!!! Never go to the PC side.........
ReplyDeleteBlue Screens........ Augh
But I'm sorry bout the talent leaving....thats messed up.
But heres is my 2 cents.
Music
If you have a artist your interested in, i would do it anyways and have a quick text saying you don't reserve the rights and that is was a class project....
or like I told one before, go to myspace or band camp and look at some of the artist (and i mean idie) and listen to see if their music can be used
most of these indie artist are
quick to say yes
quick to respond
love the publicity
and you can keep up with them and they may feature your video on their website.
And is far as final cut goes.....especially in the hdmz, if you need help, hit me up....well ill be here for 2 weeks so hit me up soon.....because if you don't know what your doing.......you may hit that media offline and you'll be pulling hairs out lol
Also storyboard your events to help you tell the story. I do that to get my ideas off the dome of my head, but some people are proficient enough to just make the video without a layout...but it helps you to get the job done quicker by laying out your initial idea and add more later
just do a google images search on storyboards and choose a template
and you don't have to be a good artist....I enjoy drawing stick figures.....
hope you like it
I never thought about indie artists! Thank you so much for the suggestions and for offering help with final cut. I'm almost done with my editing though, so I'm just sticking with windows sadly.
DeleteI really like the idea of using a storyboard.
Thank you for the awesome suggestions :)
Considering the time constraint, I say use what you are comfortable with for this project and branch out when you feel comfortable. ;) There are classes here at MTU that specifically use Final Cut.... ;)
ReplyDeletesarah,
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited to see your finished video! I just finished reading through your recent blog posts regarding it and had a few comments I wanted to give, some of which were already touched on by Ronny and Wendy - they beat me to it!
I was really pleased to see in your design plan how you intend to keep an air of ambiguity around your message. Before coming over to your blog I had just commented at Stevies blog about how that can be very valuable. It's good to allow your message to be flexible so as to more easily appease a wider audience.
Somewhat related (and this is entirely an "artistic" suggestion/comment) but maybe you could even take the mystery of the video one step further by not showing the viewer what the piece of paper says, only showing that the main character picks it up, reads it, and gets back on track. Maybe that's too ambiguous for what you want, though!
Ronny's comment regarding indie artists was something I was also going to touch on, and he basically covered everything I was going to say! If you think you're going to explore that avenue for this or any future projects (or just looking for music!) bandcamp.com, as ronny mentioned, is a great resource for this. You can search "free" + any number of different music genres and usually find some really neat stuff. I remember you saying in class that you were really attached to the song you have picked out, though, so you should stick with what best strengthens your arguments :)
I never would have thought about not showing the paper. I already filmed it though. But I appreciate the suggestions.
DeleteI'll definetely check out bandcamp.com It sounds like an interesting site.
Thank you :)
